Eero Saarinen Womb Chair — Reupholstery
This Eero Saarinen Womb chair, designed in 1948 for Knoll, arrived at our workshop requiring complete reupholstery. The Womb chair’s generous, enveloping form was Saarinen’s answer to the need for a chair that would allow the sitter to curl up comfortably — a revolutionary concept in mid-century furniture design.
Our upholsterers carefully stripped the existing fabric and rebuilt the cushioning system within the fibreglass shell. The Womb chair’s distinctive comfort relies on precisely shaped foam layers that follow the shell’s organic curves, and our team replicated these contours faithfully to maintain the chair’s signature embracing feel.
The chair was reupholstered in premium fabric, with the seat cushion and back cushion tailored to sit perfectly within the shell. The completed Womb chair restoration preserves the inviting, cocoon-like comfort that has made Saarinen’s design a beloved fixture in modern interiors for over seven decades.
