This Sheraton period dry sink, an elegant example of late 18th century American furniture, arrived at our workshop with a deteriorated finish that obscured the fine details of its construction. The dry sink’s delicate proportions, tapered legs, and refined inlay work reflect the Sheraton style’s emphasis on lightness and linear beauty.

Our conservators carefully removed the old finish, revealing the original mahogany and satinwood surfaces beneath. The stringing and banding inlays — hallmarks of Sheraton craftsmanship — were cleaned and repaired where necessary. Each surface was hand-sanded with care to preserve the veneer’s integrity and the crispness of the inlay edges.

The refinishing process used techniques appropriate to the Sheraton period, building a lustrous finish that enhances the contrast between the mahogany ground and the lighter inlay woods. The completed dry sink now displays the refined elegance and technical sophistication that distinguish the finest Sheraton period American furniture.
