This American Empire drop leaf table, crafted from richly figured burl chestnut, came to our studio with a deteriorated finish that obscured the wood’s extraordinary grain patterns. The Empire period’s bold proportions and dramatic veneers make these pieces particularly rewarding to restore.

Our craftsmen carefully removed the old finish to reveal the spectacular burl chestnut figure beneath. Each surface was hand-sanded through progressively finer grits, taking care to preserve the veneer’s integrity. The refinishing process used period-appropriate techniques to enhance the burl’s natural chatoyance and depth.

The drop leaf mechanism was cleaned and adjusted to ensure smooth operation. The completed table showcases the dramatic burl chestnut grain that makes American Empire furniture so distinctive, with a finish that protects the wood while allowing its natural beauty to command attention.
