This Poul Kjaerholm PK-22 chair, a masterpiece of Danish minimalist design, arrived at our studio requiring complete re-weaving of its distinctive wicker seat. Kjaerholm’s PK-22 combines a precise matte-chrome steel frame with a hand-woven flag halyard or wicker seat — a juxtaposition of industrial and natural materials that defines his design philosophy.

Our weavers carefully removed the deteriorated wicker and prepared the steel frame for the new seat. The re-weaving process follows a specific pattern and tension that Kjaerholm specified to achieve both the visual effect and the supportive flex that make the PK-22 so comfortable despite its minimalist appearance.

Each strand of wicker was woven by hand, building up the seat surface with the consistent tension and spacing that Kjaerholm’s design requires. The completed PK-22 presents the refined material contrast and geometric precision that have made Poul Kjaerholm’s furniture among the most coveted examples of Scandinavian modern design.
