Pierre Paulin Ribbon Chair — Reupholstery
This Pierre Paulin Ribbon chair, one of the most celebrated designs of 1960s French modernism, arrived at our workshop requiring complete reupholstery. Paulin’s Ribbon chair wraps a continuous band of fabric around a hidden metal frame, creating the fluid, sinuous form that revolutionized furniture design when it was first produced by Artifort in 1966.
Our upholsterers carefully removed the worn original fabric, exposing the tubular steel frame and rubber webbing structure beneath. The webbing was inspected and replaced where necessary, and new foam padding was shaped to reproduce the precise curves that give the Ribbon chair its wave-like silhouette.
Stretch fabric was expertly fitted to the chair’s complex three-dimensional form, maintaining the seamless, sculptural appearance that defines Paulin’s design. The completed reupholstery restores this Pierre Paulin Ribbon chair to the bold, flowing elegance that earned it a permanent place in the collections of major design museums worldwide.
