This Egyptian marquetry jewelry box, featuring intricate geometric inlay patterns crafted from multiple exotic woods and mother-of-pearl, required delicate repair and refinishing. The box exemplifies the centuries-old tradition of Islamic geometric marquetry, with complex tessellated patterns assembled from thousands of tiny wood and shell pieces.

Our conservators stabilized areas where the marquetry veneer had lifted or separated, carefully re-adhering loose pieces and replacing missing elements with matching materials. Each replacement piece was hand-cut and fitted to maintain the mathematical precision of the original geometric patterns.

The refinished surface reveals the full spectrum of natural wood tones and the lustrous shimmer of mother-of-pearl inlay that give Egyptian marquetry its distinctive character. This meticulous restoration preserves a remarkable example of traditional Islamic decorative craftsmanship for future generations to appreciate.
