Cast Iron & Bronze Hitching Post — Artifact Restoration
This cast iron and bronze hitching post, a surviving artifact from 19th century New York, came to our conservation studio requiring comprehensive preservation treatment. Years of exposure had caused significant corrosion to the iron structure while the decorative bronze elements had developed an uneven patina.
Our conservators employed specialized metalwork techniques to stabilize the cast iron, removing active corrosion while preserving the surface character that speaks to the artifact’s age and history. The bronze ornamental components were carefully cleaned and treated to achieve a uniform, stable patina that will protect against future deterioration.
Structural reinforcements were made where necessary using period-appropriate materials and methods. The completed restoration preserves this architectural artifact’s historical authenticity while ensuring its long-term survival — a tangible connection to New York’s streetscape heritage.
