The Eames Lounge Chair: Built to Last, But Not Forever
The Herman Miller Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman (model 670/671), designed by Charles and Ray Eames in 1956, remains one of the most iconic pieces of furniture ever made. But after decades of use, even the best-built chairs need attention.
Shock Mount Failure: The Most Common Issue
Shock mounts are the rubber connectors that bond the plywood shell to the aluminium frame. Over time — typically 15 to 30 years — the rubber degrades, hardens and eventually separates from the wood or metal. Signs include:
- The backrest tilting or feeling loose
- Visible separation between the shell and the aluminium bracket
- A “clunking” sound when you lean back
- The chair sitting at an uneven angle
Shock mount replacement is the single most requested Eames repair. It requires removing the old mounts (which are bonded to the plywood), preparing the surface, and installing new mounts with precise alignment. Improper installation can crack the plywood shell — this is not a DIY project.
Leather Restoration & Reupholstery
Original Eames leather develops a beautiful patina over time, but it can also crack, dry out or tear. Options range from leather conditioning and colour restoration (for minor wear) to full reupholstery (for severe damage). When reupholstering, the choice of leather matters enormously — the wrong hide will change the chair’s character.
Shell & Veneer Repair
Plywood shells can develop cracks, delamination or veneer damage. Rosewood, walnut and santos palisander veneers each require specific repair techniques. Surface scratches can often be addressed with refinishing, but structural cracks may require wood stabilisation or shell replacement.
Base & Hardware
The five-star aluminium base can develop scratches, pitting or loose glides. Polishing restores the lustre, and replacement felt glides protect your floors. The tilt mechanism and swivel bearing should also be inspected during any repair.
