American Federal Duncan Phyfe Sofa — Reupholstery
This American Federal period sofa, attributed to the workshop of Duncan Phyfe, required complete reupholstery while preserving its historically significant carved mahogany frame. The elegant lyre-back and reeded legs that characterize Phyfe’s finest work remained in excellent structural condition.
Our upholsterers removed the existing fabric and rebuilt the seat foundation using traditional methods appropriate to the Federal period. Eight-way hand-tied springs were installed over a webbing base, creating a support system consistent with early 19th century techniques. The padding layers were built up to achieve the period-correct silhouette.
The sofa was upholstered in a refined fabric selected to complement the mahogany frame’s warm tones and the Federal period’s restrained elegance. The completed piece honours Duncan Phyfe’s legacy of sophisticated American craftsmanship while providing the comfort expected for continued daily use.
